Concrete separation membrane is used for building & road construction.

Separation Membrane

A waterproof or separation membrane shall be used between the concrete slab and the sub-base. Separation membrane shall be impermeable PVC sheet, transparent or white in colour, laid flat with minimum creases. Before placing the separation membrane, the sub-base shall be swept clean of all extraneous materials using an air compressor. Wherever overlap of plastic sheets is necessary, the same shall be at least 300 mm, and any damaged sheathing shall be replaced at the contractor's cost. The separation membrane may be nailed to the lower layer with concrete nails. The separation membrane shall be omitted when two layers of wax-based curing compound are used.

A separation membrane of impermeable plastic sheeting shall be laid between the concrete slab and the sub-base by nailing with concrete nails to the lower layer. Wherever overlap is necessary, the same shall be laid by at least 300 mm. Before placing the separation membrane, the sub-base shall be swept clean of all extraneous materials using high-pressure water jetting or compressed air.

Concrete pavements can be designed for different bonding conditions, i.e., completely bonded, partially bonded, and unbonded concrete pavements. In the case of unbounded rigid pavements, a separating layer of polyethylene sheet is used between pavement quality concrete (PQC) layer and subbase layer to form an unbonded condition. Technically, the primary function of this polyethylene layer is just to maintain an unbonded condition between the layers so that the frictional stresses developing due to the contraction and expansion of concrete slabs are reduced significantly.

PQC separation membrane will reduce the percolation of water from PQC to the underlying layer, which may help maintain the water-cement ratio (W/C ratio) and strength of the concrete.
